All about finishes and fills
We’ve put together a beautiful pile of sample cushions and mini squabs to showcase some of the style, fabrics and designs we can produce for you. If you’ve ever wondered what the difference is between a flange, top-stitching and piping, read on….
Flanged cushions
Flanged throw cushions are popular as they add a luxury subtle detail to a cushion or squab making your space look curated and bespoke. Flanges work particularly well with linen and cotton blends, as the fabric holds the shape well without being too floppy.
There is nothing worse than a floppy flange!
Piped cushions
Piped cushions give a more formal structured finish to a cushion, and this is a popular way to finish velvet cushions. You can also choose a contrast piping to add personality and bring a modern aesthetic.

When it comes to squabs or window/dining nook cushions for seating you can choose between soft-fill and foam.
Soft-fill (top and bottom at right) can be made from spun polyester to give a more cost-effective alternative to a feather-wrapped foam. Both look beautiful and give a relaxed feel to your space.
Foam (two middle squabs at right) comes in standard heights of 50, 75 and 100mm but we can get pretty much any height custom-made.
We cut most of our foam in our workshop and can template to fit odd shapes including trapezoids and curves.
An envelope finish (left) wraps around the front of the squab with seams down the side. This is a clean and sleek finish and works well with mid-century furniture and a foam base for a sharp look.
A piped and bordered finish (left) looks lovely in natural and natural-look fabrics, and with a soft fill for a relaxed comfy vibe. However it can look very polished on a foam core too.
Here the stripes are pattern-matched through the piping and border.
All of our squabs have lapped zips for easy access for cover removal. We place these where they will not show.
Many of the fabrics we use are performance fabrics and some can even go through the washing machine!
We will provide you with care instructions for your specific fabric choice.
This wool squab (above) shows a narrow top-stitched border. Top stitching works beautifully, simply as an extra detail, but can also help reinforce the seam for heavy use areas, and to keep all the seam allowances neatly in place for a smooth finish, especially with thicker fabrics or those with a loose weave.
All finishes are priced slightly differently as labour varies – we use an inhouse designed calculator to ensure we give consistent pricing based on your space. And we love to discuss the best options for finishes and fills with you to suit both the space and your home’s style.
If you have been thinking about updating your space with soft-furnishings don’t hesitate to get in touch.
